Marlene Dumas

Marlene Dumas (b. 1953) – among the preeminent contemporary artists, creates paintings, drawings and installations. Studied painting in South Africa and in the Netherlands, where she also graduated in psychology from the University of Amsterdam. Her works have been exhibited in Documenta in Kassel and at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Dumas often processes existing images, such as press photographs and works by old masters. Her paintings explore themes related to contemporary colonial history as well as sexuality, race, violence.
