Catarina Simão

born 1972

Catarina Simão – is an architect, researcher and artist. In her works she explores the relations between colonialism and post-colonialism and the archival record. Since 2009 she works with the film archive of Mozambique, studying how its colonial and post-colonial history and politics are manifest in images, how film narratives convey historical reflections and the political heritage of the country—and what is consciously or unconsciously omitted from the archive. Her work has been shown at the Serralves Museum in Porto, Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid, Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart, and Manifesta 8 in Murcia, Spain.
